Watching is free from anywhere on the route; a $3 round-trip shuttle runs if you'd rather not fight for parking. And the forecast, which spent the week hedging, finally committed: mostly sunny and dry through the parade window, 85 by afternoon, with the day's 30 percent storm chance holding off until after 2 — by which time the last Jeep should be parked and the first ice cream already regretted. In 2017, an eighth-generation Yemeni coffee farmer named Ibrahim Alhasbani opened a small shop called Qahwah House on Schaefer Road in Dearborn, serving the coffee his family has grown in Yemen's highlands for two centuries. Nine years later, that one storefront is 27 locations in nine states — and it has company. Three Yemeni coffee chains headquartered in Dearborn — Qahwah House, Haraz, and Qamaria — now run 121 shops across 14 states, a number that prompted Dearborn's mayor to declare the city the "Coffee Capital of America" last November, and nobody with a straight face has disputed it. The national press arrived in waves — NPR, Food & Wine, the Washington Times — and the freshest scholarship, from UM-Dearborn's Sally Howell just three weeks ago, argues the shops succeed because they sell something American café culture quietly abandoned: a third place — alcohol-free, halal, open past midnight, built for lingering. In Columbus, Indiana — a town of 50,000 that owns more world-class architecture per capita than any city its size on Earth — sits the house that invented how midcentury America wanted to live. The Miller House, commissioned in 1953 by industrialist J. Irwin Miller and finished in 1957, is a full house of aces: Eero Saarinen designed the building, Alexander Girard the interiors, Dan Kiley the landscape. Its heart is the conversation pit — Girard's sunken living room, cut into the marble floor and lined with cushions he re-dressed by season — the earliest and most photographed example of the form, the ancestor of every sunken den in America and of a certain fire-pit living room our publisher has been threatening to visit. The town around it is the fuller miracle: Miller's Cummins Foundation quietly paid the architect fees for public buildings starting in 1954, which is how a small Indiana city ended up with Saarinen churches, an I.M. Nivel 3, cuando se justifique: al oeste hasta la línea de Indiana; al este hasta Sandusky y las islas del lago Erie de Ohio; la isla Pelee, Ontario (la única excepción canadiense, en transbordador); al sur hasta Lima y Findlay; Adrian y Lenawee; al norte por Oakland y Macomb. Los sábados, el Spread recorre todo Míchigan y Ohio, y de vez en cuando Indiana. Todo lo demás en Canadá sigue siendo viajar.
