A fiberglass pickleball eight feet across, painted neon green, was set on the bank of the Maumee on Thursday morning and has been sitting there ever since, on the Glass City Riverwalk beside the Toledo Pickle Co. Guinness World Records is looking into whether it is the largest in the world. That is a submission under review, not a record held — nobody has produced a bigger one, and nobody has certified this one either. Both halves of that sentence are true and the paper is going to keep printing both. The best thing about it is a decision nobody would have noticed if it had gone the other way. The holes are painted, not cut. The artist, Dean Davis, refused the usual fixes — people would normally have thrown some grays in there, he said, and some have painted the holes flat black, which he thinks looks silly. So he filled them with blue sky instead. His reason, in his own words: we always want to make it cheery. Lo mejor de todo es una decisión que nadie habría notado si hubiera salido al revés. It was too big to cast whole. Toledo Custom Fiberglass, owned by Dean Ball, built it in eight components — laid up by Bobby Adams, finish-rounded by Joel Sullivan, sanded for days and then sanded again after the paint went on and showed blemishes the bare shell had hidden. Three to four months end to end; the painting alone took about a week and a half, with materials from 21st Century Paints Inc. on Airport Highway. There are breathing tubes built into the base and the mortar, because a sealed sphere sitting in ninety-degree sun has to be able to let the pressure out somewhere. The idea belongs to Mike Gibbons, president and chief executive of Mainstreet Ventures and of Toledo Pickle, which he founded in January 2025; he wanted the thing built by local trades, and it was. Metroparks Toledo cleaned the site, set the studs and intends to add rails. Reception so far, in Gibbons's word: heartwarming. Sandra Gabriel, who plays there three or four times a week, put the case for it plainly — she thinks it will help Toledo and the riverfront, and that people coming in on the boats are going to see it. Adam Cassi, executive director of Keep Lucas County Toledo Beautiful, was at the unveiling. One number is worth handling carefully, because it has been travelling in a shorter form than it deserves. A regulation pickleball is about three inches across. This one is ninety-six. Ninety-six divided by three is thirty-two, not thirty — a small thing, and exactly the kind of small thing that hardens into a fact if a paper repeats it without doing the arithmetic.
