Two things happened to the same technology in the same four days, in two states, and only one of them was a crime. First, the cutting. A Toledo police spokesman confirmed that at least three Flock licence plate reader cameras were found damaged over the weekend. 13 Action News crews saw one cut down near I-280 and Starr Avenue; police were called there about 4:20 p.m. Friday. Officers on patrol found two more on Sunday — one at Burger and Seaman, the other in the 100 block of Burger Street. Another came down near Dorr and Joyce earlier this month. No suspects have been identified publicly. A department statement attributed in the station's copy to Troendle — printed there with no first name or rank, so that is how we are printing it — said the cameras “are an important tool that help solve crimes and provide valuable leads,” and that damaging them “only impacts our ability to investigate crimes and serve our community.”Primero, los cortes. Second, the clock. Flock Safety has proposed cutting how long it keeps plate data from 30 days to seven, and says it will have the new timeline running by the end of the year. On Thursday the Monroe County sheriff, Troy Goodnough, went first and adopted the seven-day limit rather than waiting. His office is also switching on Flock's Audit Assistance tool, which flags abnormal search patterns and can automatically suspend a user's access pending review by command staff; the company has separately made multi-factor authentication mandatory, commissioned an outside product review by the security firm Bishop Fox, and opened a coordinated vulnerability disclosure programme. From the sheriff's release: “Any abuse of this technology is entirely unacceptable... This policy change ensures the Sheriff's Office retains only the data necessary for active investigations while immediately purging irrelevant records.” The justification for seven days is a company figure relayed through the release — that more than 90 percent of investigations using partial-plate searches finish within a week. It is Flock's number about Flock's product, and we are labelling it that way.Segundo, el reloj. The Lucas County sheriff and the Toledo police have not published a retention figure, and a chart that quietly leaves out what it does not know is a chart that lies. Lucas County Sheriff Mike Navarre has told the 13abc I-Team that a shorter window could hinder investigations, because some crimes are not discovered for days or weeks. The objection that is not about days at all came from Jessica Molina of Abriendo Puertas Para Soluciones, whose work is with Toledo's immigrant population. Her argument is that arguing about retention skips the prior question. After what she describes as a two-hour meeting with city leaders and police, she said, “We learned that the city does not yet have the safeguards in place to really monitor this program,” and that representatives acknowledged local data-governance drafts remain unfinished. “There are so many safeguards that need to be put in place first before you start using a surveillance tool of the entire community.” Molina also said Flock has been used for immigration enforcement in Dayton, Shaker Heights and Columbus and that “they all have proof.” ⚠️ That is her claim. The same company is the subject of the vandalism, the retention fight and the drone programme. That is not an accusation. A six-member district committee — the chair and secretary of each county central committee — met the afternoon of Aug. 10, hours before a 4 p.m. statutory deadline, and picked Stidham 4-2. He was one of three applicants and one of the six voters. Huron County chairman Sven Stahl chaired the meeting because Stidham was a candidate; Stidham, as Erie chairman, called it and ran it until the session began. Leonard, in a written statement: “the meeting was not conducted in accordance with Ohio law... The meeting should have been an open public meeting. Additionally, because under Ohio law the committee members were public officials for this purpose, Caleb Stidham should have recused himself.” Ottawa County Republican secretary Toni DeLuca, who voted no on the committee, wrote: “It is a flawed process that allows a candidate to vote for himself on a committee of 6 people.” Stidham's answer: “there is no conflict of interest because I did not lead or chair the meeting that selected me.” Under state law the tie goes to Secretary of State Frank LaRose, whose decision is final. Both sides file written statements by 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21; the outside deadline is Aug. 28. ⭐ Worth holding in view: LaRose is term-limited and is himself the Republican nominee for state auditor on the same Nov. 3 ballot. It was available Saturday morning, it was flagged in this desk's own notes as a probable miss, and the archive confirms it never printed. Here it is. The Ann Arbor Responsible Energy Coalition — a committee that campaign finance disclosures show has been funded by DTE — sued the City of Ann Arbor and City Clerk Jacqueline Beaudry on Aug. 10, six days after Beaudry certified a petition putting a city charter amendment on the Nov. 3 ballot. The amendment would add Sections 15.11(a) and (b) to the charter, establishing a municipal electric utility governed by a nine-member Ann Arbor Municipal Electric Utility Board — five members elected one per ward, four appointed by council, one appointed seat reserved for a representative of organized labour who lives in the city, first elected in 2028. It does not authorise buying DTE's wires. The text ties any acquisition to the Home Rule City Act and Article 7, Section 25 of the Michigan constitution, which means a separate later vote at a three-fifths supermajority. The suit makes three claims: that the petition is short on valid signatures — “nearly 200” short even counting supplemental sheets; that the clerk wrongly allowed those supplemental sheets after her initial canvass; and that the amendment violates the single-subject rule. All three are allegations in an unadjudicated complaint. More than 5,000 signatures were certified. Brian Geiringer of Ann Arbor for Public Power: “We're confident that Clerk Beaudry followed procedures correctly... This groundless lawsuit is a direct attack on the will of the people to have an alternative to DTE on the ballot this November.” DTE spokesman Ryan Lowry has said the takeover proposal “will cost the City of Ann Arbor nearly $1 billion on day one.” The city has not responded to the suit. ⚠️ Three things we could not establish: which court, what relief is sought, and whether any hearing is set. Anthony Wayne marched the Legion of the United States out from Roche de Bout and, some five miles on over flat, badly drained, timbered ground, his mounted Kentucky volunteers ran into a line of about 1,100 warriors of a confederation of Ohio and Great Lakes tribes. The militia fell back through the legion's front guard, which also broke. A light infantry skirmish line finally drove the warriors into the shelter of trees a tornado had thrown down years before — the timbers the battle is named for — and the legion's left flank charged and cleared the field. Wayne's scouts followed the retreat to the mouth of Swan Creek without engaging. He camped that night on high ground within sight of the British Fort Miamis, whose garrison had refused to open its gates to the men falling back past it. Two officers and fifteen to seventeen soldiers were buried in the days after; the ground was too hard for more. On Aug. 23 the whole legion marched back through the battlefield on its way to Roche de Bout. The sidewheel steamer Atlantic left Buffalo for Detroit on the afternoon of Aug. 19, 1852 under Capt. J. At 2 a.m., near Long Point, the propeller steamer Ogdensburg, wheat-laden out of Cleveland, struck her on the port side forward of the paddlewheel; the Ogdensburg's steam whistle was broken and the first mate's reversing manoeuvre came too late. The Atlantic steamed on until water reached her boilers, then stopped and sank. The Ogdensburg turned back, found her ten minutes later, and took survivors off the stern. Estimates of the dead run from at least 130 to 300; 250 is the figure usually cited. The Supreme Court eventually held both vessels at fault. Robert Lucas had mustered a force Mason characterised as meant for “murdering our citizens.” The council backed him and rebuked President Jackson. The day before, Lewis Cass had written that the Secretary of State was threatening Mason's removal if Jackson's recommendations were not followed. Jonathan Stewart, Port Clinton Mayor Mike Snider, and Gary Anderson himself. Latta, whose father trained there with the Guard and who first visited as a boy in the 1960s, said the most recent available figures put the National Matches' local economic impact at $34 million a year. Snider, who started volunteering in the pits at Rodriguez Range at about twelve: “This place is an economic driver.
