A city of about 20,000 on the east bank of the Maumee is about to do something almost no American town has been asked to do: set a number, in its own charter, for how much power a single building may draw. Oregon City Council has sent to the Nov. 3 ballot a citizen-initiated charter amendment that would cap any data centre in the city at 25 megawatts. Council did not choose to do this. The people who gathered them have been standing at the council microphone for close to a year. United Neighbors of Oregon collected signatures at a flea market, outside the library, on street corners and door to door, and beat their own deadline. “For almost a year, our group has been fighting for a chance to allow the citizens of Oregon to express their opinion on the future of Oregon,” Jim Davis told the council. Laura Davis was blunter about the politics of it: “We already voted out the past mayor and the council president.” She credited a Cincinnati group, Conserve Ohio, with writing the statewide data-centre petition and then going looking for cities whose charters could be amended the same way. It would be easy, and wrong, to write this as a town that has made up its mind. The same meetings have produced a steady counter-argument, and it is about money. Councilwoman Kathleen Pollauf, who said she is content to let the voters decide, asked the same question from the dais and did not get an answer: “If we don’t get a data centre, I agree. That is how much of last week Ohio farmers could actually work: 0.9 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Aug. 16, down from 5.2 the week before. Heavy rain covered most of the state. Topsoil moisture went from 72 percent adequate and 2 percent surplus to 48 percent adequate and 52 percent surplus — a fifty-point swing in seven days. The strange part is that the crop does not seem to mind. Corn improved to 66 percent good to excellent (52 good, 14 excellent) from 62 percent, and soybeans to 61 percent from 59. Corn is 100 percent silked and 81 percent in the dough stage against a five-year average of 68 — well ahead. The one stage running behind is denting, at 15 percent against an average of 17. Soybeans are 100 percent bloomed and 89 percent setting pods against an 81 percent average. There is a fortnight in a northwest Ohio August when a peach is worth the drive, and this is it. MacQueen Orchards, at 7605 Garden Road in Holland — the corner of Gunn and Garden — grows seven varieties of peach alongside more than sixteen of apple, and sells them off its own counter with sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage, green beans, cauliflower and squash. The market is open every day but the major holidays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May through October, and it takes WIC and Senior Nutrition coupons. The phone is (419) 865-2916. The Toledo Farmers’ Market, 525 Market St., runs Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. into November; (419) 255-6765.
