An explosion tore through Brent Industries, an industrial textile-reconditioning and recycling plant in the 2900 block of South Avenue — near State Route 2 and South Byrne Road — at about 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, during a shift change. The woman's family identified her to WTOL and 13abc as Mary Allen — a mother and grandmother, her relatives said, who had gone to work before dawn. The man had not been publicly named Tuesday evening; the Lucas County Coroner will release both identities officially. Two or three other workers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, Armstrong said, and she did not believe anyone was taken to a hospital. Firefighters arrived to three emergencies at once, Armstrong said — “a commercial building on fire, a structural collapse where people might be trapped, and a hazardous-materials response.” The plant stores chemicals, cylinders and tanks of mineral spirits; a ruptured water line inside dropped hydrant pressure and forced crews onto multiple mains. Roughly 100 firefighters responded, more than three times a normal call. Crews entered the front office and part of the warehouse to search before the incident commander pulled them back out, with a section of collapsed roof left hanging against a wall. The U.S. EPA's on-scene coordinator, Jon Gulch, said air monitoring was mostly “non-detect” and that crews watched a ditch that drains toward Swan Creek for runoff — “we have not seen anything in that ditch.”Los bomberos llegaron a tres emergencias a la vez, dijo Armstrong — «un edificio comercial en llamas, un derrumbe estructural con posibles personas atrapadas y una respuesta de materiales peligrosos». The cause is under investigation. Toledo Fire's arson investigators are working with police detectives — standard, Armstrong said, whenever a fire kills someone, and not a sign that officials think the blast was suspicious. The ATF was asked to help with consultation and cadaver dogs but is not leading. Armstrong said it was too early to say whether the flammable chemicals set off the explosion. Nearly twelve hours after the first blast, elevated streams from ladder trucks were still playing on the smoldering wreck, and Toledo Fire recalled personnel to hold the site overnight; the response, the chief said, could run a day or more.La causa está bajo investigación.
