The duty had been set for Aug. 19 and was pulled back three days by Proclamation 11056 of Aug. 18, which moved the date to 12:01 a.m. Aug. 22 and said the reprieve was granted because “Canada has expressed a commitment to remove the discriminations.” That proclamation went on public inspection at 11:15 a.m. Friday and is scheduled to appear in the Federal Register on Monday, at 91 FR 54789 — two days after the suspension it granted ran out. The judge’s letter also puts a new fact on the public record. The affidavit says Hughes supplied the gun that Victor Davis, 41, is accused of using, took it back afterward and removed it from the scene, and told a detective he had done so. Judge William Connelly Jr. set bond at $1 million; a preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 28. Davis has been indicted on aggravated murder, is held on $1.1 million bond before Judge Dean Mandros, and is due back Sept. 28. This is a different case from the Airport Square killing three weeks later. The Toledo plant where two workers were killed Tuesday has one federal enforcement action on the public record. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s administrative docket EPCRA-05-2017-0015 names Brent Industries Inc. of Toledo, lists a complaint filed April 24, 2017, and records the case as closed by an expedited settlement with payment received. The statute involved, the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, governs telling authorities and neighbors which hazardous chemicals are kept on a site and planning for what happens if they get out. It is a reporting law, not a workplace-safety standard. The docket does not say what the penalty was, which chemicals were at issue, or what the reporting failure was. In the meantime the Food and Drug Administration and a grower recalled iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico over cyclospora, and on July 20 the FDA said publicly that the recall stood even after a laboratory false positive was retracted. The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department’s own outbreak page carries a link to that recall. Michigan’s does not. The state Public Library Fund is 55 percent, and that fund is now a budget line item rather than a fixed share: it distributed $479.7 million in fiscal 2026, down 4.93 percent from $504.6 million, and the state has certified only six months of next calendar year, so the library budgeted the half it knows about and cut 5 percent off it. A state audit for 2024 and 2025 finished Aug. 17 with nothing of significance flagged. At Aventura, bar manager Samantha Hamrick built the España Verde — blanco tequila, summer gin, an herbal liqueur made in Chelsea, ancho chili liqueur, an oleo saccharum of bell pepper and citrus, a mezcal rinse, orange bitters, salt — out of her grandfather’s obsession with bell peppers and a backyard game of lawn darts. At Peridot, managing partner Giancarlo Aversa traces the Nod back through a drink at the Last Word, which he opened in 2012, to a cucumber-melon martini made by his mentor Robbie Schultz at the Alley Bar. At Echelon, bar manager Max Schikora is sober and does not taste his own drinks, relying on his colleagues’ palates instead; the same bar presses spent carrots into syrup and renders Wagyu trim into fat to wash rye with, then sends the fat back to the kitchen to brush steaks. And at Hidden King, owner Mark Wilfong refused for years to put an old-fashioned on the menu, until Phil Attee of the Ann Arbor Distilling Company talked him into a pre-batched one kept in the freezer. The Michigan Renaissance Festival’s 47th season starts today on a permanent purpose-built village called HollyGrove, at 12600 Dixie Hwy. in Holly, Michigan. It runs weekends through Oct. 4, plus Labor Day on Sept. 7 and a single “Festival Friday” on Oct. 2, and it is closed the rest of the week. Gates are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine, with the parking lot open at 8; there is no re-entry after 7, but a hand stamp gets you back in the same day. Inside are more than 80 artisan shoppes, three sit-down restaurants and a great many food stalls, human-powered rides, seven themed weekends, and jousting three times a day at 1, 3 and 5, included. The ground is grass, dirt, gravel and, after a day like today, mud; the site is wheelchair accessible with designated parking, but rents no strollers or chairs — scooters are $50, first come, at the box-office will-call. Dogs six months and older are welcome with vaccination records and nothing else on four legs is. One factory-sealed 16.9-ounce water bottle per person is the whole of the outside-food rule, allergies and infants excepted. There is no wi-fi and the cell service is patchy, so screenshot the ticket before you leave the car. A general-admission ticket is good for any one day of the season, and military, veterans and first responders take $5 off, or go free on Festival Friday. The Holy Year opens Oct. 25, and for its duration the Puerta de Reyes becomes the Puerta Santa, the door pilgrims come through. The occasion is the VIII Centenario — 800 years since the first stone of the Templo Primado was laid, an anniversary that fell on Aug. 14 — doubled this year with the centenary of the canonical coronation of the Virgen del Sagrario. On the 15th the image left the building, out through the Puerta Llana and across the old town to the plaza del Ayuntamiento, something it had done only once before this year. Toledans went on drinking water at the cathedral from a botijo, as they do every Aug. 15.
