It's official, in the driest possible prose: NOAA's harmful-algal-bloom bulletin No. 7, issued Thursday, confirms that western Lake Erie's annual cyanobacteria bloom began around July 12 in Maumee Bay and has been "slow to expand" since — similar to last year's sluggish season, and running about three weeks behind 2024's progression. The bloom is expected to stay mostly in the western basin, which is to say: our end of the lake, the one Toledo drinks. The good news comes in two parts. First, the June seasonal forecast still holds: a moderate bloom, severity 3.5 on NOAA's 10-point index (range 3–4.5) — mild by the standards of the last two decades. Second, The Blade reported Monday that toxin levels remain low. The caveat is the standing one: microcystin toxins concentrate in the paint-green surface scums that form on calm days, so the usual rules apply regardless of how mild the season is — don't swim in visible scum, and keep dogs out of it entirely. Peak is forecast for mid-to-late August, lingering into September. Las buenas noticias vienen en dos partes. What to watch from here: NOAA's twice-weekly bulletins through the season, the city of Toledo's water-quality dashboard (which publishes intake readings daily), and the calm-weather stretches — this weekend's Saturday storms, ironically, help keep scum from forming. If the season lands at 3.5, it would extend a quiet run that has charter captains and beach towns quietly grateful and researchers carefully declining to declare victory: the phosphorus that feeds the bloom still arrives every spring, and a wet one would bring the big blooms right back.
