We led Saturday's second front with the hit-and-run that put Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a hospital bed, and three days later the story has not moved in the one direction it needs to: the driver is still at large. As of Monday evening, Toledo Police had made no arrest. Here is what the police report now tells us. Around 10:45 Sunday morning, on Detroit Avenue near Highland, a silver car crossed the center line into the lane of the vehicle carrying the 80-year-old congresswoman — she was a passenger; her campaign manager, Kegan Zimmerman, 26, was driving — and after the collision the other driver left on foot and, a witness said, was picked up by a second vehicle. Both cars were impounded. And here is the detail that turns an accident into an investigation: police say the suspect is not believed to be the owner of the silver car, which points to a vehicle borrowed or stolen, and to a driver who had reason not to stay.

The better news is about the patient. Police Chief Mike Troendle visited Kaptur in the hospital and came away plainly reassured: "When I visited her in the hospital, she was communicating. As a matter of fact, she was completely with it. She was talking about politics and things that need to be done for law enforcement in our area." Both she and Zimmerman remained hospitalized Monday with non-life-threatening injuries, and her office said the two "continue to recover" and thanked the community. Anyone who has watched Kaptur work will recognize the tell in the chief's account: eighty years old, a day out from being hit by a car, and already talking shop.

Some context on who was in that car. Marcy Kaptur was first elected to Congress in November 1982 and took her seat in January 1983 — which makes this her 43rd year representing Toledo, and makes her the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House of Representatives. She has outlasted eight presidents in the job. She grew up in Toledo the daughter of grocers, trained as an urban planner, and has spent four decades as the loudest Great Lakes voice in Washington on the auto industry, on trade, and — relevant to this paper every summer — on the health of Lake Erie. Whatever one makes of her politics, the plain fact is that a person who has represented this city longer than most of its residents have been alive was run down on one of its streets on a Sunday morning, and the driver is still gone.
