For two days this week — Tuesday and Wednesday, ten in the morning to ten at night — the largest rubber duck on Earth sat in the open air at Hollywood Casino Toledo, moored by guy-wires, six stories of taxicab yellow against the sky, watching the traffic go by with the serene indifference of something that has never once been in a hurry. Her name is Mama Duck. She tours. This was a return engagement — she'd drawn such crowds on her last visit that the casino asked her back, and general manager Brad Hirsch said the house was "thrilled to welcome her back," which is the sort of thing casinos usually say about high rollers, not waterfowl. Viewing was free, the merchandise tent ran eleven to six, the food trucks noon to seven, and the timing — the two days before Jeep Fest floods downtown with rubber ducks of the dashboard-sized kind — was either a coincidence or the finest piece of thematic scheduling this region has ever produced.
We publish today's photograph — shot from the road, past the guardrail, by the only reader this edition has — both as documentation and as vindication. Readers of the regular No. 8 will recall that today's cartoon depicts rubber ducks commandeering a Jeep in the rain. We drew it before we knew she was in town. The desk maintains this was journalistic instinct; the duck, six stories tall and facing our general direction, declined to comment.
