The turbines started producing electricity in 2003, the first utility-scale wind project built in Ohio. They were retired in 2025 after more than 20 years, at the end of their operating life. Preliminary work began in August with mobilization and the removal of underground electrical equipment. Through the fall the four will come down one at a time, with cranes lowering the blades, the nacelles and the tower sections to the ground. The foundations run about 33 feet down and will be dug out rather than blasted, and each site is then backfilled, inspected and restored. The city has the job finishing in mid-December and says the schedule depends on the weather.Los trabajos preliminares empezaron en agosto con la movilización y el retiro del cableado eléctrico subterráneo. Two things keep the site empty afterward, and neither is the age of the machines. Wood County expects to need the ground for the landfill, and Plain Township’s zoning restricts solar development there. The city says it is pursuing a new solar project at other locations to replace what the turbines used to make. For anyone driving past: access to the Wood County Landfill is not affected, and the cranes will be visible at the site through the fall. The turbine parts are not going into the landfill. The contractor plans to recycle the metal, wiring and concrete, recover oils and fluids where it can, and look at whether the major components can be resold or reused.
